The Romans

Our topic for Autumn Term is...

This term our topic is ‘The Romans’ where we will be  learning historical events such as the failed invasion by Julius Caesar, the successful invasion of Britain by Claudius and all about what made the Romans such a successful army. Alongside this, we will also be studying Geography and focusing on how land use has changed in Chester since the Roman times.

Let's learn a bit more about who the Roman's were:

The Romans originally come from Rome, in Italy. There is a legend about how Rome was founded by Romulus. Romulus and his twin brother Remus were the sons of the God Mars. When they were very young they were abandoned by the River Tiber. Fortunately they were found by a wolf, who took them in and fed them with her milk. The twin brothers were eventually found by a shepherd who took them in and raised them. The boys grew to be very strong men, and decided to create a town in the very spot that the shepherd had found them. However, it wasn't very smooth sailing! The boys could not agree on anything!

Romans in Chester

The Romans are a really important piece of our local history. The Romans founded Chester as a place called Deva. It is thought it was named Deva after the River Dee OR after the goddess of the Dee. The Romans built a whole city in Chester, that would help them to travel to invade Ireland and Wales. There is lots of things that we can see and do around Chester that tell us about it's Roman heritage, such as the Roman Ampitheatre!
