Literacy 2017/18

Our genres

This term we will be exploring a range of genres:

- portal stories

- myths and legends

- persuasive texts

- biographies

We will look at the key features for each of these genres and learn a range of writing skills to support us in writing our very own.

Our class novel

In class we will be reading 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman.

Read the blurb below:

Gunnar is the son of a Viking chieftain, living peacefully on his family steading with his mother, father and their people – until they are raided by Skuli and his Wolf Men, who raze his home to the ground and take his father's life. Gunnar swears an oath to avenge his father's death and save his mother from Skuli – but first he must run to save himself. Murderous raiders, hand to hand battles to the death, mythical flying wolves and a relentless sea journey to the Land of Fire and Ice... Unknown to Gunnar, his life has been foretold, and he finds he has a destiny greater than his own story.

Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation (SPaG)

Throughout the course of the year, we will be focusing on spelling (please find attached the year 5/6 spelling list and National Curriculum spelling appendix). Any extra practise you can do with your child around learning these spellings will be hugely beneficial to their learning and will stand them in good stead for year 6. Spellzone has fantastic FREE games and resources to support year 5/6 spelling (copy & paste the first link below into your browser).

We will also be practising how to write using different tense, different persons and how to use nouns and pronouns effectively to help our writing flow. On top of all this, we need to learn some brand new punctuation- dashes and brackets to add more information. I cannot emphasise enough how reading is one of the most powerful ways to support children in learning these skills.

It's going to be an extremely jam-packed term of learning! smiley
